Last year we visited Malpe port to see the thousands of fishing boats that were there due to strike with fishing industry. This time we were staying at a hotel next to Malpe in a place call Udupi next to a huge beach. From what we have seen on this trip is southern India are trying to stop waste, mainly plastic bottles, being thrown every where. This beach was a prime example of that. Dustbins and cleaners all down the tourist beach shame they don’t pass the message to the fishermen and around their area.
We took a boat over to “St Mary’s Island” where there had Basaltic pillars all round it. Lovely views and a nice walk round the island. Here Keith decided to give Sajith a lesson in canoeing only one problem was one of the guys where you hire it from tag along as well. Not in a canoe but holding on from the water making it very hard and heavy to actually canoe. Not very good. All water sports have to have one of their guys accompany you. They just do not trust Indians.
In the evening we did “The Sea Walk” which to us Brits is a sea defence wall. Nice to be there for sunset though. We then, with Sajith, hailed a Tuk Tuk and asked driver to take us to a bar. Dropping us of in the centre of town we were directed in through a dark doorway to a room equally as dark. Lots of hand pointing to banish us up a stairway to a much larger equally as dark room. Lovely cold beer ordered but Loraine didn’t realise hers was strong at 7%. Plenty of giggles then 🙃😊. Fast Tuk Tuk back to hotel.
Restaurant waiters must think us Brits strange as we drink black tea with no sugar or milk already added. Cold milk in tea and on cereal not hot. We don’t take sugar with everything and not really keen on curry for breakfast. We certainly had some strange conversations in this particular hotel.

After a couple of enjoyable days here we moved on to Kunnar  which is Sajiths home town.
Five hr drive but lovely scenery. Arriving at Kairali Heritage resort. When you are doing a long trip it’s always a good idea to have the relevant paper work for each hotel. She started off by saying we owed so much ehh no first mistake already paid. Then she said breakfast not included. Wrong plain written English says yes it is. It got even better when we departed three days later.
No porters and this was three star. Sajith had to drive to car to our little house and unloaded bags.
Sajith was in charge of our adventures in this area and he did just that. It is the time of temple festivals and so off we went to find some. Colourful, exciting and loud. Lovely to welcome to these events by local people. Back to hotel where it took an hr to get a beer eventually asked for it to be bought to our room.next afternoon we decided to walk the track to the “Bar” and so wished we hadn’t (I think the hotel thought that as well). The track and bar was owned by the hotel and basically it was a shit hole. The gardens around the hotel were lovely and well maintained by a team of women so we were shocked to see this area.
The next day Sajith in charge again took us to a beach everyone us allowed to drive on for 40rupees. This is a communist area so a huge Hammer and Sickle is on the rocks at one end.
The evening adventure was a fantastic surprise with Sajith taking us to meet his Mum, Dad, Sister and niece and nephew. We had been invited to their lovey house for dinner. Surrounded by rubber trees high on a mountain the house was lovely. The whisky bottle even came out much to Sajiths dads delight. Mum was quite taken with Loraine and the two of them had lots of hugs. Hardly any English spoken but we felt a friendship was created (Facebook!!) and we were very privileged to have meet them all.
Two days later bill time. Bill came and they had charged for breakfast arhhhhh.  Eventually agreed and paid by card.
Then we had strong words re the rubbish dump.
Off we went to Madekeri. The hotel phoned me up two days later and they had missed out a number on payment so they were short by £100. They were useless re management but bet they were glad to see back of us. Def one for trip advisor.
